2011 Canberra Yellowfin Tournament
CANBERRA GFC 30TH ANNUAL YELLOWFIN TUNA TOURNAMENT
Bermagui, NSW 14-16 May 2011
Gale Warning Port Stephens to Gabo Island was not the kind of weather forecast we were looking for and it certainly kept a number of boats from travelling dowrn to Bermagui. However, we did manage to entice 121 boats representing 23 clubs from NSW and Victoria to fish our 30th anniversary tournament.
With the gale warning we had to cancel the first day of fishing and this left everyone anticipating who was going to take home the incredible lucky angler prize that we had on offer. There were many who were practising their acceptance speech!!!
Joshua Hay will remember this tournament for many a year. Not only did this young man win the fabulous 520 Prowler Haines Hunter with Honda 90hp motor, trailer and GME electronics…. he also won the heaviest Yellowfin Tuna for the tournament and most Striped Tuna by a Junior. He went home with a truck load of goodies. This fifteen year old from Batemans Bay was over the moon and everyone agreed it was a great result.
6am Sunday saw a major run on the radio with everyone signing on. It turned out to be a great day with over forty Yellowfin tagged and a few captured. The heaviest was 26.6kg so they were not huge but reasonably plentiful with the majority tagged. We also had a tagged spearfish which is a potential record, breaking that held since 1992. Another catch of note was 489kg Tiger shark.
Monday was another fishable day with the majority of the fleet out by start of fishing at 7am. No where near as many fish being called in but we did have Striped Marlin on board Tri-Kat in the morning. We also had an angler speared by the Marlin so they had to come in and be treated by the ambulance officers. Of course the jokes were going round that we should have had a prize for the Marlin tagging the most anglers but all turned out well.
This was a really fabulous event and our huge marquee was full of good cheer, conversation and laughter fuelled by the very busy bar and the guys catering.
We are of course indebted to Haines Hunter, Honda, GME, Bermagui Bait and Tackle and all our other generous sponsors. Without our terrific competitors we would not have an event so thank you and stay tuned to our website canberragamefishing.com for news on what we have in store for next year.

The 30th Annual Canberra Game Fishing Club
YELLOWFIN TUNA TOURNAMENT
Bermagui, NSW 14-16 May 2011
Can you believe what we have to offer this year!!!! We always have a swag of goodies as giveaways but this is the daddy of them all ……….a fully rigged Haines Hunter complete with Honda engine. Basically every thing you could wish for in a game fishing boat and it can be yours just by entering.
If you have fished it before, you know what a fabulous event it is and I hope you encourage your friends to join in as well. We pride ourselves on running a very professional tournament and also a very friendly one. Last year we had twenty three clubs represented and everyone had a great time both in the marquee and on the water. Of course some had a better time than others, with perhaps more fish and not such a sore head, but then that’s part of the fun.
The marquee is of course heated and all activities are centred here. You can come direct from your boat and just relax. The bar will be fully stocked for your pleasure and there will be heaps to eat.
The barbie on Saturday night is free but you must book for the dinner on Sunday night as numbers are strictly limited. We are expecting big numbers so get in early!
Once again, our sponsors have been extremely generous and we have heaps of lucky draws. Remember, you must be present on the Saturday night for all these draws.
Breakfast will be available at the gantry from 5am – 7am. This is being hosted by the Bermagui Marine Rescue and all proceeds go to them so come and enjoy a delicious start to the day and contribute to this worthy group of dedicated people.
I look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces and hearing those same voices on the radio. Of course new participants are more than welcome and be prepared to have a great time catching up with friends and getting amongst the fish!
See you there.
